Roof Replacement
Asphalt shingle roofing
Architectural (dimensional) asphalt shingles are the most common roof on American homes because they balance cost, appearance and wind performance. Choose by your climate: a high wind rating with enhanced nailing on the coasts and Plains, algae-resistant granules in humid regions, and a color that suits your attic and any HOA rules.

Three-tab shingles have largely given way to architectural shingles, which are thicker, rated for higher wind and longer-lasting. Premium lines add heavier mats, impact resistance or reflective granules.
Humid regions, especially the Southeast and Gulf Coast, see black streaks from Gloeocapsa magma algae, so copper-infused algae-resistant granules are worth asking for. In hot climates lighter or reflective (cool roof) shingles can lower attic temperatures; California's energy code includes cool roof requirements in some situations.

Signs you need shingle roofing
- You're replacing a roof and comparing materials
- Current shingles are three-tab and near the end of their life
- Algae streaks keep returning
- You want better wind ratings on an exposed lot
- An HOA requires a specific color family
How the roofer handles it
- 1
Choose a line
Compare standard architectural, designer and impact-resistant options from the same manufacturer.
- 2
System components
Matching starter strips, hip and ridge caps, and underlayment can qualify for an extended manufacturer warranty.
- 3
Install
Shingles are fastened with the manufacturer's high-wind nailing pattern and correct exposure.
- 4
Register
The warranty is registered in your name, with installer certification noted if it applies.
What affects the cost
Prices depend on what the roofer finds, so the contractor quotes after inspecting. These are the main factors:
- Shingle line and weight
- System warranty requirements
- Hip and ridge length
- Algae-resistant or reflective granules
- Local supply after storms
Frequently asked questions
What shingle color is best for a hot climate?
Lighter and reflective colors absorb less heat and can lower attic temperatures somewhat. Ventilation and insulation matter more, and your HOA may limit choices.
Are architectural shingles worth it over three-tab?
Yes for most homes. They resist wind better, last longer and are now the standard product.
What do shingle warranties cover?
Manufacturer warranties cover material defects; workmanship is covered separately by the contractor. Enhanced system warranties require specific components and certified installers.

Worn, broken shingles replaced with a new shingle roof
Brittle, curling shingles lose their seal and break in the next storm. A full tear-off exposes the decking for repair, and new shingles go down with fresh underlayment and flashing.
